The library’s multi-sensory room is an inclusive and welcoming space that provides calming tactile and visual sensory input through free play and exploration.

Calming Areas

A Multi-Sensory Room (MSE) is available in the Youth Services Department at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library. Patrons may reserve the MSE in 30-minute increments up to two hours per day. Sensory Friendly Kits

Sensory-friendly Kits are available to borrow at the Youth Services Desk. Each kit contains a pair of sound-control headphones, sunglasses, fidget toys, and a weighted neck towel. Patrons must check out the kits with their library card.

Communication Devices

The Library offers a low tech communication board in English and Spanish to help patrons with their visit. In addition, all iPads in the Youth Services are equipped with a communication board application.

LSTA grant awards are made possible by funding from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) as administered by the State Library of North Carolina, a division of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (IMLS grant number LS-253645-OLS-23). LSTA grants are awarded in response to specific needs of public, academic and community college libraries. These federal funds are investments that help libraries deliver relevant and up-to-date services to their communities.
