The Neuse Regional Library System is dedicated to providing the community with the tools and resources necessary to accomplish their goals. One of the most important and powerful resources the Library provides to patrons is technology. With libraries leading the way in free access to the use of technology, it is equally important to make sure that the community members receive education on how to use this technology.
With technology evolving at such a rapid pace, some can find it intimidating to venture into the world of computers. Whether you are completely new to computers or just want to brush up on your computer skill fundamentals, you may consider making use of the Library’s free computer classes, offered throughout the region. The Library’s regular computer classes are one hour sessions on a variety of topics designed to take you from the very beginning through some of the most common tasks that beginning computer users should learn.
Next month we will be introducing our latest class. Have you ever wanted your own website but have no idea how to get started? Join us at the Kinston-Lenoir County Public Library on October 23 at 6:00 p.m. as we discuss different options for building your site, what you should know before starting, and how to use some common tools for creating a website for personal, organizational, or business use.
Need to start back at the beginning? Computer Basics begins with the most basic information about using a computer, including learning about the main hardware components of a computer as well as how to use the keyboard and mouse and the Windows operating system. In Internet Basics, students learn to navigate the web and search for topics of interest. In Email Basics, you can learn how to compose a message, send an attachment or add a person to your address book.
The Library also offers basic classes in the Microsoft Office suite, the most commonly used productivity software for both businesses and individuals. The Library’s Microsoft Word class teaches you how to create a text document using fonts, indents, special formatting, and other word processing features. The Microsoft PowerPoint class teaches users how to make their own slideshow that includes text, images, and transitions, and the Microsoft Excel class teaches users how to put their data into a spreadsheet format and even create their own formulas for automatic calculations.
For those that prefer the use of a tablet over a computer, may want to consider attending the iPad Basics classes for beginners. This is a great way to learn how to navigate the device using the available touchscreen gestures and the basic functions of the preinstalled apps. For patrons that do not own an iPad, they will be able to use one of the Library’s iPads while attending the class.
For a full list of upcoming classes, check the Library’s calendar of events at www.neuselibrary.org. Library users can also schedule one-on-one appointments with an available staff member on any of these topics or other basic computer topics. You are also encouraged to bring in devices such as smartphones, tablets and e-readers for assistance with whatever problems you may be experiencing. Technology can be helpful in so many ways, but we understand that learning about it can be daunting. Allow us to help you take full of advantage of your computer or device.
